Although Lamai has been a popular beach destination like Chaweng, it has not experenced the same development, but has remained the same character as many years before. Of course there were some changes and new resorts had been built, but they did not change the beach and the village a lot. So Lamai is still a good combination of excellent beach and small but attractive village for shopping and nightlife, inclusive some good restaurants.
Lamai beach is devided into two sections. The northern part lays near along the island´s main road and the beach itself is rather narrow with shallow sea. Here are both kinds of resorts located, luxury hotels like the Le Meridien and simple huts like New Hut.
The middle part of Lamai beach is the better part with deep enough sea to swim and wide beach for laying on sun beds or towels and sitting in beach restaurants. Here are the best beach resorts located (see recommendations below). The southernmost part of the two kilometer long beach is remote and quiet, and at the beach end, currents and waves are washing sand away from the beach and make it a bit rocky.
Lamai beach is a good beach for relaxing and watersports. And the village´s shops and restaurants are always nearby.
