Chaweng has never been a quiet place and was one of the first beach and tourist destinations on Ko Samui. Its long white sandy beach attracted many holiday makers for years, not only because of the beach itsself and the shallow warm sea, but also because of the beach road with its hundreds of shops, restaurants, bars, massage studios and other entertainments.
Since the Tsunami in 2004, guests from all over the world started to come to Chaweng in growing numbers and a construction boom begun with new and luxury hotels, resorts and shopping places. Most of them not at the beach but on the hill sides and the back country. The beach resorts in Chaweng beach also changed from simple bungalows to modern hotels with big pools. In consequence the nice and simple beach restaurants disapperedwith the coconut palm trees, which were cut down.
Today Chaweng beach looks like a beach that is not much taken care of. It is noisy by too many boats and jetskis, and the prices are high.
At least young people, who like to have entertainment all day and night love to come and go to the ARK Bar, which started its successfull club business some years ago.
Chaweng beach is a place for those who like entertainment and shopping more then a quiet and peaceful beach. To spend money and have fun, Chaweng might be the place to go on Ko Samui.
A good but more expensive alternative is Chaweng Noi beach south of main Chaweng beach. The beach is cleaner, there are less people and fewer motorsports and the resorts are more luxury.
