Ko Phayam is a very small (17 km2) island in the northern Thai Andaman Sea near to the border of southern Myanmar. The 364m high island is located 30 km south of the provincial city of Ranong and about 15 km west of the mainland. Ko Phayam is still a very natural island with wild forests and swamps, but also nice long sandy beaches. The few Thai people grow coconut palm trees, cashnew nut trees and rubber trees to earn their lifes. Tourism is a growing factor, but only in some months of the year. Nevertheless the inhabitants decided, that Ko Phayam should remain an island without cars and watersports, but with lots of nature and clean air.
Spending holidays on Ko Phayam means relaxing, hiding away and enjoying silence and nature. Life is very simple and basic, as bungalows on the beach an on the island are. The supply with elecrtic power is still not available all day. But the people are friendly and open minded, and fresh Thai food in various simple restaurants is as good as nearly everywhere in Thailand. It can be very much recreational to be on Ko Phayam for some days.
A few resorts on Ko Phayam offer boat trips for fishing, snorkeling or diving. The best places are not around the island but a bit more south in the Andaman Sea. Daytrips to Ko Surin nationalpark or to the smaller islands of Ko Kam can be worthwhile, if the weather and sea conditions are fine. In the future trips into the Mergui archipelago in Myanmar with its hundreds of unspoiled islands will be possible.
Exploring the small island is an option using a rental motorbike or a bicycle. In about one hour nearly every spot reachable by roads can be visited.
